escape a pesky summer coldThe summer season is finally here, and the weather will be warming up. Your schedule is probably already filled with activities to enjoy that ample Vitamin D boost from the sun. What you’re not planning for is a pesky summer cold.

Enteroviruses spread more during warm weather, as opposed to their cold weather loving counterparts. You’ll still get the fever, sore throat and cough, but these viruses can also cause skin rashes and diarrhea. They seem to last longer as well.

They spread the same way common colds do through respiratory secretions through coughing, sneezing and contact with contaminated surfaces. So practicing good hand washing techniques is key. You should always wash your hands for at least 20 seconds, making sure to get underneath your nails and in between your fingers.

For some healthy adults, you may experience no symptoms, but can still pass on the cold virus!

Staying on track with your diet will also help to maintain a good working immune system. Summer time can be laden with high fat BBQ’s and sugary treats, which keeps the digestive system sluggish. Keep up with your fiber and stay hydrated! A happy gut is essential for good immune function. If you’re not already taking a high quality probiotic, now is the time to start. 1. Aids digestion. Soothes the stomach and promotes enzymes to help you digest your meal. It calms and relaxes the smooth muscles of the stomach and reduces flatulence. Try a cup of mint tea or a few drops of peppermint oil rubbed into the belly.

2. Helps oral health. Mint freshens your breath by inhibiting the growth of bacteria. Chew a few mint leaves after your meals.

3. Eases cold symptoms. Mint is a natural expectorant and can help to remove mucous from the airways. Try a few drops in a humidifier, bath, or on the chest and sinuses.

4. Skin cleanser. Although peppermint oil is too strong for your skin, fresh mint leaves applied to the skin regularly is an effective way to combat acne. It is naturally antibacterial. Try crushing a few mint leaves with purified water and apply to the skin for 1 minute before rinsing thoroughly.

Exercise Before School Reduces ADHD Symptoms in Children

Children with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) may benefit from exercising daily before school. A resent study by US researchers published in the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology showed reduced ADHD symptoms in the classroom and at home with exercise.

The study involved over 200 elementary school children ranging from kindergarten to second grade with either normal behavior patterns or symptoms of ADHD. The children were randomly divided into two groups that either participated in about 30 minutes of daily moderate to vigorous physical activity before school or sedentary classroom-type activities. After twelve weeks, all children in the physical activity group demonstrated improved attention, less mood swings and improved social behavior, including the children with ADHD symptoms.

In practice, I frequently recommend more vigorous exercise activity for my patients with ADHD and consistently see benefits in behavior. Hopefully, we will see more studies showing the benefits of physical activity in the treatment of ADHD and other conditions, and ultimately have physical activity, and perhaps less drug treatment, incorporated into the conventional treatment approach to these conditions. At the very least, all schools should incorporate more physical activity into the school day.

Too Much Screen Time in Young Children is Harmful for Their Development

At the University of Montreal, researchers studied the television viewing habits of about two thousand toddlers (age 2 years). They discovered a correlation between the amount of time spent watching television and the child’s ability to learn. They concluded that three hours or more of television viewing per day results in impairment in vocabulary and math skill development at the preschool level. They also suggested that excessive television viewing can lead to attention and physical fitness issues later in childhood. The study results did not find any correlation with toddlers that watched two hours or less of television per day.

The America Academy of Pediatrics recommends that parents limit television viewing to a maximum of two hours per day in children two or older and to avoid any television exposure in children before the age of two.


Paleo Banana Muffins

gluten free | dairy free | carbohydrate restrictive

Recipe from Patient of Village Health Clinic

Preheat oven to 350 F.


3 ripe bananas
1 cup almond butter
1 TBSP raw honey – melted
1/3 cup coconut oil – melted
1 TBSP vanilla extract
3 eggs
1 cup almond flour
1/2 tsp sea salt
1 tsp baking soda

In a food processor combine bananas, almond butter, honey, eggs, vanilla and melted coconut oil. Mix until smooth. In a medium bowl combine almond flour, baking soda and sea salt. Add wet mixture to dry and mix well.

Line or grease 12 muffin cups with coconut oil.
Fill each cup to about 2/3 full.
Bake for 26 – 30 mins or until golden and toothpick comes out clean.

Yields 12 muffins
